At Leibniz University Hannover, course evaluation is carried out by students for the purpose of improving teaching and learning processes, the range of study options available and study conditions.
The faculties, as the bodies responsible for course evaluation, will carry such out of their own accord at the end of the lecture period of each semester. The students will evaluate the study courses by means of questionnaires created by the faculty in question. Alongside faculty-specific questions, all evaluation questionnaires at Leibniz University Hannover will include obligatory core and context questions. The core questions relate to the structuring of the course, the teaching methods used, teaching competence and learning climate; the context questions accompany the core and faculty-specific questions by providing information on learning success, previous knowledge, the required effort and the overall evaluation of the course. In addition, a percentage will be given showing how many students’ studies are aimed at obtaining a teaching position.
Calculation of LQI
Using the obligatory core questions, the ZQS/Quality Assurance calculates the average for every course within a faculty – the Teaching Quality Index (LQI). At the end of every semester, the faculties receive a report showing the LQI for all the evaluated courses. Afterwards, the courses will be divided into green, yellow and red categories – the colour showing a need for action and informing on which teaching courses need to be improved. The contextualisation of the results will then follow in the faculties alone. This means that the faculties will decide on their own account whether and in which teaching courses an actual need for improvement exists and what the suitable measures to improve the quality of the courses in question are.
The goal of the LQI is to support the faculties in the continuous improvement of teaching.
